New Zealand Cricket is at rock bottom. They have never been one of the cricket power houses but they have always found a fighting team of above average cricketers. Sir Richard Hadlee is the only exceptional talent that came out of new Zealand. Martin Crowe’s 1992 World Cup Team was on route to become champions when Inzamam Ul Haq took them apart in two consecutive matches. S. Fleming, N.Astle and C.Cairns kept them in the above average fighting team, however ever since they are gone, they are touching the bottom.
D.Vettori was their only hope for survival and he is gone too. However, there is some bright ray of light becoming visible at the end of the tunnel. They have mix of good cricketers now and they just have to stick with them for another two years or so, and they may become a force to recon with.
M.Guptill and J.Ryder are good openers and they have good back up young blood Watling and Rutherford if required. K.Williamson is another bright prospect and new face of New Zealand cricket. He has talent to carry the team on his shoulder which he showed with his 145 not out in ODI in South Africa. Ross Taylor seemed like found another inspiration after loosing out the captainship. Brendon McCullum is one of the under achiever with immense talent. He is one of the leading wicket keeper batsman of modern time and perhaps, number 6 is the right place to bat for him at ODI.
New Zealand is never short of bits and pieces cricketers, ever since Lance Cairns era. C.Harris and G.Larson continued that tradition and now Elliot and Franklin following it. N.McCullum is another down the order good bat who can give accurate ten over spell in the middle of the inning. T.Southee is Allan Donald look a like and hopefully the training he got under his coaching for a brief while will make him improve immensely. Mills, Boult etc are average fast bowlers who become very effective in New Zealand and Australian conditions. New Zealand might be at the bottom at this moment but if they continue with the same group of cricketers for another two years, come 2015 in familiar territory and they might become a Team who can surprise many.
