In form M.Hussey & L.Simmons with Corey Anderson at number 3 looks promising. Following them you have Rohit Sharma, A.Rayudu and A.Tare and if needed Harbhajan Singh. Do they really need K.Pollard – the batsman? K.Pollard might have taken couple of very good catches but he has dropped few as well and Pollard as a bowler is more negative impact than positive. With L.Malinga out, will Mumbai Indians take a risk and go with a genuine bowler (Santokie or De Lange) instead of Pollard. I do not think so, but I wish they do that.
They are playing against Chennai, who is known to win big matches with Dhoni in the leadership. Chennai is struggling with form, with not much impactful bowling. McCullum is out of playing XI, that means there is huge pressure on Ex-Mumbai Indian D.Smith to deliver a big inning. Raina and Du Plessis are good, but they need match winning inning either from D.Smith or M S Dhoni and if either of them fails at start or at the end, they do not have bowling to bring themselves up. In bowling department, M M Sharma is the only shining piece of puzzle for Chennai. Ashwin and R.Jadeja has struggled to keep things quiet and they are missing the key international bowler to give them good start or depth bowling.
Mumbai still has decent bowling line up even without Malinga. Harbhajan is the second best spinner after S.Narine in the competition. If Praveen Kumar is fit, he can give good company to Bumrah and if pitch assist spin bowling then P.Ojha can be handy as well. Their fifth bowler (Anderson-Pollard) is the problem and if Mumbai takes the risk of sitting out of form Pollard and go for reliable bowler, it might just help them. Irrespective of that, considering the form, and home field advantage, and unless Dhoni is not chasing and playing some miracle inning in last couple of overs, Mumbai may just be able to pull this one off. It might be a huge surprise but in cricket winning momentum plays a big role and the way Mumbai has won the last game to qualify and the way Chennai is playing (with no home games this season), Mumbai has an edge.
